Executive & Board Member Bios
The Current 2007-2008 Virginia Chapter Leaders are:
President: Kim Schoenadel, CID, ASID
In addition to the customary name, title and phone number, Kim Schoenadel's business card has a line that says "Likes Boating, Blenko & Football."
It's a great conversation starter, especially if, like Schoenadel, you are into speed boats, hand-blown Blenko glass (she's a big-time collector) and/or football, in particular the kind played at her alma mater Virginia Tech. Every member of her firm has business cards that are similarly personalized. Turn the cards over, and you'll find a terse description of what the business does: "interior design, space planning, environmental graphics, and facilities services." Client services even include the assistance of a "move manager" to help smooth out the transition to newly designed facilities.
Schoenadel founded KSA, a 24-member certified woman-owned firm, in 1982 and today serves as its CEO and president. Her key business partners are Cameron Stiles and Lorri Finn. KSA, in case you are wondering, stood originally for Kim Schoenadel and Associates, but now stands for the firm's focus on Knowledge, Service and Attitude.
"I am no longer KSA," she says. "KSA is an ideal that invokes pride in those who are part of the firm. Our branding philosophy lets our employees take ownership in what they create, and helps solidify relationships with our clients." It's a great place to work because individual in-office schedules are flexible. "With advances in technology, it is much easier to work at home, and this can be particularly helpful for working moms," Schoenadel says.
The firm's work includes Virginia Commonwealth University's Student Commons and Siegel Center, Virginia Tech's Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, prototypes for a new generation of state ABC stores, corporate offices of Saxon Mortgage and Rockingham Memorial Hospital's Short-Stay Hospital. In addition, it counts among its clients other universities and community colleges, such as the University of Virginia and Washington and Lee, libraries and other corporations such as Capital One and Philip Morris USA. KSA helps clients answer a question that has become part of its corporate mantra: "What inspires you?"
Schoenadel, a certified interior designer (CID), does a lot of writing about the way people work in different environments and about the use of time, and she travels to Blacksburg weekly to teach a course in interior design business procedures.

President Elect: Beth Dickerson, CID, ASID
Past President: Emily Washington, CID, ASID
Emily Smith was born in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, where it is hot and humid; the soil is black and rich, where the life blood is cotton. She lived on Deer Creek where Jim Henson got his inspiration for Kermit the Frog...maybe she got her inspiration there too.
Emily went to Clemson University's school of architecture for two years including a sculpture class. She had trouble getting the plaster mixed to the right consistency and got help from a young architectural student named Jim Washington...you can probably see where this led. She transferred to the University of South Carolina for her last two years where she graduated with a BA in Fine Art/Design. Two weeks after graduation Emily and Jim got married and moved to Atlanta where she worked for Alan Ferry Interiors, an internationally recognized retail and corporate design firm.
Jim had two brothers in Norfolk; one an architect and one an engineer who formed an A/E firm and asked us to join them. She was excited about being the HEAD of the interiors division ...so young and naive! With no mentor, Emily invented many wheels, read management books, attended seminars...college does not teach about in-depth administration, time sheets, and control of project hours to end up with a profit. During this period Emily and Jim had two children, a son, Cole, and a daughter, Miriam.
She decided that to succeed in the interiors field, she needed to take the NCIDQ exam. This test was not very well known but she could see that one day it would be important. After passing the exam that year, she wanted the association of other designers and joined a firm named Interscapes, Inc. After six months she was appointed Interiors Director. They added a branch in Richmond. After months of commuting, she hired a director for the Richmond branch named Janet Kane. Janet was a real ASID booster and encouraged Emily to become more active. At Interscapes, the largest Herman Miller dealer between Washington and Atlanta, she learned how large firms operated. The firm, however, went bankrupt....now that was a real learning experience. Emily established Alpha Design Corporation, specializing in commercial/institutional design and was consultant to architectural firms. During this time she was on the state board of ASID for over 10 years and on the VA Tech Interior Design Advisory Board for 10 years.
One A/E firms for which Alpha Design consulted for many years was Clark Nexsen. They merged in 1997. She became Vice President, Director of Interior Planning. CN has offices in Norfolk, Alexandria, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Roanoke. Emily directed the interiors for all branches with her staff at the headquarters facility. Her tasks became primarily mentoring, marketing, and meetings. Emily longed for more design time as programming, affects of color, and space planning were her passion. In 2005, she resigned and opened Angle Design where she now provides these services. Her specialties include in-depth programming/space needs analysis, interior planning, and specifying color for behavioral modification.
Emily has worked on projects throughout Europe and the US and has won the 2001 Hampton Roads Outstanding Professional Woman Award plus numerous design awards. She has been active in Habitat for Humanity, Mayor's Homeless Task Force, Elder in the Presbyterian Church, board for Child and Family Services of Southeastern Virginia, and always a member of ASID.
Director at Large: Ruth E. P. Deibler, ASID Allied Member
Ruth Deibler received her B.S. in Design (Interiors) with an Art minor from Radford University in May 2004. She is a military brat that considers “home” Newport News, Virginia after living in 7 states and 2 countries. She began her career as a residential designer at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia but has since moved on to healthcare environment at Carilion Design Group in Roanoke, Virginia. The Design Group is the internal design department for Carilion Health System, which manages several hospitals, clinics and medical office buildings throughout SW Virginia. The variety and scale of projects and fast-paced environment truly fits her personality.
Ruth's ASID participation began as the secretary of RU's student chapter for 2 years. Following graduation, she was Student Affairs Chair for the Virginia Chapter and planned Student Career Day at RU. That same year she received the Janet Kane Spirit Award for the Virginia Chapter. The following year she was the Virginia Chapter's Southwest Region Chair, planning various events throughout SW Virginia for ASID members.
During her free time, Ruth enjoys anything outdoors, especially if it means being on the water. She enjoys reading anything relating to living consciously and truly enjoys live music, including reggae, afro-beat, neo-funk/jazz and classic rock.
After her first child (a girl) is born in December of 2006, Ruth plans to use her maternity leave to study for the NCIDQ, which she plans to take in March 2007.
Ruth resides in Vinton, Virginia with her husband Brian and their two dogs, Ollie and Natty.
Financial Director: Teresa Ko, CID, ASID
Teresa (Edwards) Ko received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design from James Madison University. In 1990, she decided to pursue a Masters of Architecture at Virginia Tech, which she completed in 1994. Fully intending to take off for the city and begin practicing with an architectural firm, Teresa was surprised to find herself teaching as an adjunct faculty member in Radford University's Interior Design program. She truly loved teaching and continued to teach full time at Radford for 51/2 years. During this time, she began a PhD in Interior Design at Virginia Tech and is currently ABD.
Teresa met her husband Andy in Blacksburg and they married in November of 2001. Shortly thereafter, she took a position with Thomas Koontz • Architect, PC in Blacksburg. She is the sole interior designer there, practicing in both arenas of architecture and interiors. The firm provides expertise in office, ecclesiastical, retail, restaurant, institutional and residential design. By 1999 Bryan was looking for a change and came across the Closet Factory opportunity. On March 9th 1999 Bryan & his wife Teresa jumped in feet first to running their own business. Scared to death they put everything they had into the 4 employee 2600 sq ft business they just bought. Student Representative to the Board: Britney Bishop, ASID Student Member

My Philosophy: It is only by becoming involved can one truly become passionate and excited about what lies ahead.
