Executive & Board Member Bios

The Current 2009-2010 Virginia Chapter Leaders are:

President : Lisa Tucker,  CID, ASID, AIA, LEED AP

      Lisa M. Tucker has been a practicing interior designer and architect for 20 years with a specialization in historic preservation. She has owned her own firm since 1998. In addition to being a licensed architect & Certified Interior Designer, Ms. Tucker is a LEED accredited professional. She teaches fulltime in the Interior Design program at Virginia Tech including courses on lighting, building systems, and design studio. She holds degrees in Architecture and Architectural History from the University of Virginia and a PhD from the University of Missouri—Columbia in Architectural Studies.She lives in Christiansburg, Virginia with her husband Jim, their three dogs Buster, Buddy and Raider, one cat--Callie, 30 or so chickens, 4 pigs, and a duck.


President Elect: Melodi Terhune CID, ASID, LEED AP

Melodi Evans Terhune is a graduate of Mississippi State University and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Sciences with a concentration in Interior Design, a CIDA (formerly FIDER) accredited program. She also holds a Minor in Fine Art. She is a professional member of ASID, a LEED Accredited Professional, and a Certified Interior Designer, registered with the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently she practices commercial design in corporate, healthcare, higher education, and government markets at Clark Nexsen in Norfolk, Virginia where she is an Associate and Senior Interior Designer.



Communications Director: Britney Bishop, Allied Member ASID, LEED AP

Britney Lauren Bishop is a December 2008 graduate of Virginia Tech and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design, while also completing two minors in Industrial Design and Environmental Policy and Planning. She is an Allied Member of ASID and became a LEED Accredited Professional in her last semester of college. Britney currently works for Innovate Architecture and Interiors located in Portsmouth, Virginia, where her main focus of work is in the healthcare sector.

Britney has recently become engaged and is currently planning a late January wedding in 2010. With a bunch of new and different things on her plate, planning a wedding, buying a house, and being the ’09-’10 Communication Director for ASID Virginia Chapter, Britney is very excited about how the upcoming year will unfold.


Director at Large: Jo Hayden, ASID

After graduating from VA Tech in interior design, Jo Hayden, ASID began her career with an office furniture dealership. This led to an interior design staff position with Newport News Shipbuilding where Jo met her husband Gary. She continued her career with two small design firms and her own business, as 3 little ones joined the Hayden family. In 1991, they moved away from their hometown of Norfolk. Gary's position with a plastics manufacturer in Leesburg, VA also offered contract work for Jo to design the company's interiors.  Again they moved to Lancaster, PA and once again designed interiors for an equipment manufacturing company.

After 11 years away from Hampton Roads, she returned and continued her company TABB Designs. Jo pursues commercial design projects, especially office interiors focused on ergonomics, lighting, energy efficiency and environmentally responsible. Residential projects represent a new area of practice focusing on renovation and “Aging in Place” needs and solutions through design. Jo shares an office space with her husband (HVAC+P engineer) in the Ghent area of Norfolk. Her goals are to increase business, network with other design/build professionals and attain LEED AP and CID certifications.



Financial Director: Alina Soroka, ASID, LEED AP

Alina Soroka is a 2005 Virginia Tech graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. As a student she became an ASID member, since actively serving the Southwest Chapter as a White Elephant Committee Member and the Regional Chair. Currently employed by AECOM in Roanoke, she focuses on corporate, higher education, healthcare and government facilities. In the past year, Alina received her LEED accreditation, NCIDQ certification, and Virginia State Certification for Interior Design.

In Roanoke, Alina lives with her husband Brad, an art director, and Josie, their nine year-old Boxer-Lab mix. Together they enjoy traveling, spending time with friends and family, exploring local sites, discovering unique and inspiring culture and collaborating on whatever project may come along.



Membership Director: Linda Gettings, Industry Partner Representative for Noland Company

I re-joined the workforce in January of 1994 working for Manpower Staffing Agency after being a “Homemaker” for 8 years. I worked for Western Reserve Products through Manpower and after six weeks, I was hired on as a permanent employee. Western Reserve was a distributor of windows and doors. In 1996 after talk of the company planning a layoff, I resigned and starting working for AccuStaff (a temporary staffing agency). In February of 1997, I was placed with Noland Company as the receptionist, I was hired on as a permanent employee July 24, 1997. Through the course of my employment with Noland Company I have worked in various positions. I have been file clerk, office manager, payroll attendant, accounts payable/receivable clerk, shipping clerk, counter sales associate and part time show room consultant. In 2003 I was offered the “Builder Sales” position and then in 2004 Manager of the Bath and Idea Center.

As Manager of the Bath and Idea Center I have one consultant that works in the showroom with customers.  My responsibilities include managing the consultant, selecting new and innovative displays for the showroom, acquiring and maintaining relationships with builders, designers, plumbers and contracting professionals.


Professional Development Director: Beth Young, ASID

Beth graduated from the Interior Design Internship in Denver, Colorado following her BA in psychology/sociology at the University of Denver.  She successfully passed the NCIDQ exam in 1977 and has been a professional member of ASID since that time, serving as Colorado Chapter president in 1982-84.   Starting at an office furniture dealership and then with two national design firms in Denver, she designed or served as project manager for large-scale corporate interiors projects for 8 years.   After moving to Staunton, Virginia, large-scale corporate interiors were no longer an option.  She and her husband Rich started their family and Beth started the interior design program at Mary Baldwin College based on the FIDER (now CIDA) guidelines in 1986.  She stayed connected while raising her family and teaching by bringing students to ASID events, also serving as Ethics and Appellations chair in 1996-97 and as the MBC representative to the board 1986-2007.  

By Design, Beth's private practice, was started in 1996 and has included both commercial and residential projects in and around the state.  Since leaving Mary Baldwin, she's been able to focus on her design work as well as other volunteer activities including serving as chair of the Staunton Electoral Board.


Student Representative to the Board: Erin Harper, Student Member ASID

Erin Harper is from Burtonsville, Maryland and is currently a senior in the Interior Design Program at Radford University. She is a hard worker as she has taken on other leadership roles including President of Radford University ASID Student Chapter. She is excited about graduating in May 2010 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interior Design. Erin is passionate about the Interior Design field and profession, always absorbing what she can from experiences and professionals.

Erin’s goal in the profession of Interior Design is to be great designer who people respect as well as appreciate design just by living and interacting in an environment. Ultimately, she aspires to work under military and healthcare to provide aesthetically pleasing environments to those who deserve and need healing spaces. Men and women of the military and healthcare fields dedicate and give up their lives to serve others and she would like to serve these men and women by designing their environments to better serve them as they protect and serve the people.


Chapter Administrator: Sharlyn Underwood, ASID, LEED AP (Not a Board Member)

Sharlyn Underwood received her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Virginia Tech and is NCIDQ certified. She has numerous years of design experience in higher education and commercial design working for Oregon University's Facilities Services, GBD Architects in Portland, Oregon, and Virginia Tech's Campus Design and Renovations. She returned to her home state of Virginia to work for world-renowned architect William McDonough in Charlottesville, Virginia. While there, her work included interiors research on the Johnson International Building, Palm Corporate Campus, and Aspect Communications.

Nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, love led her to Roanoke, Virginia and to her work at SmithLewis Architecture, a firm dedicated to high performance environmental design. Taking on her initial task at SmithLewis of administering the C2C Home competition, she was critical to its success - coordinating volunteers and managing all 1,100 registrant entries. She continued her work in green interiors at SmithLewis leading the effort on LEED certification documentation for SmithLewis projects and researching environmental material resources.

Sharlyn currently runs her own consulting business, Sharlyn Underwood, ASID, LEED AP. Some of her clients include the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), H2 Ecodesign and Community Housing Partners. Outside of her business, Sharlyn is the Chapter Administrator of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Virginia Chapter.

Over the years, Sharlyn has held numerous board positions within ASID including past-president of the ASID Virginia Chapter. She recently served on the ASID Sustainable Design Council - a six member national council. Sharlyn is a LEED Accredited Professional. She is past-chair (a position she held for three years) and a founding board member of the USGBC Southwest Virginia Chapter. She juried for the North Carolina Sustainable Design Competition in 2006. She was an inaugural member of the Radford University Interior Design Advisory Board. While in furniture sales, she served as president of the New River Valley Founders Chapter of Business Network International.

Sharlyn is the happy mother of a very cute little guy, Thacker, who was born in 2007. She also loves hiking, camping, listening to live music, and spending time with her dogs, Senna and Sprout. Constantly pursuing her green passion, Sharlyn gardens with native plants, seeks books by inspiring authors (Rachel Carson, Barbara Kingsolver) and strives to live green in her personal life.
