The Current 2008-2009 Virginia Chapter Leaders are:
President: Beth Dickerson, CID, ASID
From the time she saw Jackie Kennedy's televised White House Tour, Beth knew she wanted to be an interior designer. After that, it was annual Designer Show House tours and a Jr. High School art teacher that convinced her to pursue her design ambitions.
Born and raised in rural Indiana, Beth was destined to attend her family's alma mater, Purdue University, where she earned her B.A. in Interior Design. After graduation she worked briefly with a residential designer and later for an engineering firm. It wasn't long before Beth realized her fascination with light and shadow and its role in shaping the environment, and headed back to Purdue for her M.F.A. in Architectural Lighting Design. While working as a lighting designer in Indianapolis, Beth completed several residential, commercial and landscape lighting projects, including an art studio for John Cougar Mellencamp, a historic lighting renovation of Jennings County Courthouse, and a “burning bush” at the Light of the World Church.
Beth came to Virginia eight years ago from Fairmount, Indiana, where she was co-founder of Historic Fairmount, a not-for-profit for historic preservation, and served as Director at Large for Marion Civic Theatre. (Fairmount's claims to fame - boyhood home of movie star James Dean and Garfield creator, Jim Davis.)
Happy to return to interior design after moving to Virginia, Beth is working as a project manager at KSA Interiors, and works in facilities management, space planning, and commercial interior design. She jumps at the chance to incorporate her lighting skills in her projects and occasionally uses some of the tricks she learned in the theater to create special lighting effects. Beth is a Certified Interior Designer, registered with the state of Virginia and is a professional member of ASID. She has served as ASID Virginia Chapter's Newsletter Chair, Communications Director, and President Elect.
Beth and her husband Gary, enjoy visiting their daughter, Maia, in Reno, Nevada, and their recently married son, Chad, and daughter-in-law, Rebecca, in New York City. Other favorites include visiting wineries, sailing, scuba diving and riding on the back of her husband`s Harley.
President Elect: Lisa Tucker, CID, ASID, AIA, LEED AP
Past President: Kim Schoenadel, CID, ASID
In addition to the customary name, title and phone number, Kim Schoenadel's business card has a line that says "Likes Boating, Blenko & Football."
It's a great conversation starter, especially if, like Schoenadel, you are into speed boats, hand-blown Blenko glass (she's a big-time collector) and/or football, in particular the kind played at her alma mater Virginia Tech. Every member of her firm has business cards that are similarly personalized. Turn the cards over, and you'll find a terse description of what the business does: "interior design, space planning, environmental graphics, and facilities services." Client services even include the assistance of a "move manager" to help smooth out the transition to newly designed facilities.
Schoenadel founded KSA, a 24-member certified woman-owned firm, in 1982 and today serves as its CEO and president. Her key business partners are Cameron Stiles and Lorri Finn. KSA, in case you are wondering, stood originally for Kim Schoenadel and Associates, but now stands for the firm's focus on Knowledge, Service and Attitude.
"I am no longer KSA," she says. "KSA is an ideal that invokes pride in those who are part of the firm. Our branding philosophy lets our employees take ownership in what they create, and helps solidify relationships with our clients." It's a great place to work because individual in-office schedules are flexible. "With advances in technology, it is much easier to work at home, and this can be particularly helpful for working moms," Schoenadel says.
The firm's work includes Virginia Commonwealth University's Student Commons and Siegel Center, Virginia Tech's Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, prototypes for a new generation of state ABC stores, corporate offices of Saxon Mortgage and Rockingham Memorial Hospital's Short-Stay Hospital. In addition, it counts among its clients other universities and community colleges, such as the University of Virginia and Washington and Lee, libraries and other corporations such as Capital One and Philip Morris USA. KSA helps clients answer a question that has become part of its corporate mantra: "What inspires you?"
Schoenadel, a certified interior designer (CID), does a lot of writing about the way people work in different environments and about the use of time, and she travels to Blacksburg weekly to teach a course in interior design business procedures.
